Sutton Parks Star Swimmer

These are Tupou’s results from competing at the New Zealand Short Course Swimming Championships. Gold in the 100m individual medley, Silver in the 200m individual medley, Silver in the 50m freestyle and Bronze in the 100m breaststroke. Tupou was the youngest to compete in the athlete with a disability category, and swum against swimmers from the ages of 15 to 22. She went to Wellington with 23 able bodied swimmers from the Howick Pakuranga Swim Club and as a club they were second overall. It was a wonderful experience for Tupou, she was able to watch the best of the best compete in the pool including the NZ olympic swimmers and paralympic swimmer Mary Fisher. While in Wellington she had the opportunity to go to Te Papa museum and was really excited to explore the museum.

Tupou is now back training hard to prepare for the Athletes with a Disability swimming long course championship held in February in Hamilton, and while she is there she is hoping to qualify to compete at NZ opens in March here in Auckland.

Sutton Park Yr 3/4 CHAMPIONS!!!

IMAG0020

For the past 6 weeks the Yr 3/4 Moana All Stars have been playing

Wednesday afternoons at the Mangere Recreation Centre.

They trained really hard every Tuesday and Wednesday during their morning

tea or lunch breaks. They learnt how to throw, dribble, catch and shoot

goals, besides that they did not know much at all about basketball.

However over time they soon learnt that it was their ‘sport’ and they were

good at it so they slowly got better and better!

After playing 6 other teams in the competition it came down to just our

Moana All Stars and St Mary MacKillop in the finals.

Our starting team for the finals was made up of Drumoni Tonga (Captain),

Velonika Havea (Captain), Robert Toia, John T, Sailopa Tupou they were our

star players of the term!!

All team members played well and with good sportsmanship.

Drumoni Tonga and Robert Toia had exceptional shooting especially Drumoni

who would shoot from a long distance.

Velonika, John and Sailopa were great on their defense and shooting skills.

Thank you to all the team members for their support: Avatailua Fesili,

Raseli Maelega, Mosese F, Faafouina Taltofi, Felise Vaisima, Richard

Thomas

Thank you teachers for coming and watching the children play.

However I would like to thank the PARENTS most of all for allowing their

talented children to play. They gave great support by cheering and

watching their children play the game, because of the parents that is why

they have done well. Once again thank you!!

Rugby Team News

On Tuesday 29th May the SPS Open Weight Rugby Team embarked on a journey to Aorere Park to see if we could contest for the South West Zone Rugby Trophy.

The playing conditions at Aorere Park were nice and dry.

Our two finest Co-captains Tulakina & Tobias were two men on a mission to win the bragging rights of the South West Zone to see who would be the custodian to enter the Auckland Champion of Champions in Term Three.

Our first test of strength was against Jean Batten School. We won the match four tries to nil with our captain Tulakina, David, Mathew & Usaia dotting down on the score sheet. (SPS 20- JBS 0)

Our second game was a match that showed Sutton Parks true test of character. The game ended in a hard fought draw against Southern Cross with our captain scoring a fine try and Usaia the ‘Flying Fijian’ scoring a long range try. (SPS 10 – Southern Cross 10)

In the third match we played our neighbours Mary Mackillop, we beat them with a soundly score of 15 to nil. Our Captain Tobias scoring two close range tries and Usaia using his pace scoring near the corner flag. (SPS 15 – Mary Mackillop 0)

Our fourth match was against Nga Iwi, the weather turned very nasty by making our duty hard to play in the rain. Regardless of the conditions we tried our best against mother nature winning 15 nil with Captain Tobias scoring a hat trick. (SPS 15- Nga Iwi 0)

Our final game of the pool was against Favona. We beat them convincingly 20 nil with Fesili, Winston, Mac & Tobias scoring tries. ( SPS 20- Favona 0)

Winng all our games set SPS up in the Semi Final against heavyweight favourites Koru School. With our confidence in full flight we would put Koru School away with a 25 nil triumph sending SPS to the Grand Final. Tries went to David scoring two, Mathew scoring two and Hennesey scoring the single. ( SPS 25- Koru 0)

Our Grand Final would be against Southern Cross who we drew 10-10 with in the Round Robin. SPS got to a flying start with Captain Tulakina scoring from a loose carry from Southern Cross. As time was ticking we had to keep our composure by not letting them score. As the pressure mounted for both teams it was all about who would make the most of their opportunities. Captain Tulakina made the most his by scoring a solo try up the middle of the park and sealing the game with another solo try at the sound of the hooter. ( SPS 10- Southern Cross 0)

What an awesome day boys! Thank you for the effort, courage, determination & perseverance for getting us to the Auckland Champions Of Champions.

Mr Pauli & Mr Loma
