The time of Matariki is on the end of June to the beginning of July from 5:00-9:00 am on the very top of Mangere mountain. It has been celebrated throughout the Maori years to begin our New Year.
Matariki is a traditional occasion to start our new year and season. So we can plant and grow new crops. Its a group of seven stars that is part of a constellation known by Maori as the The Sail of Tainui.
This is important because we believe this is time when the Maori guardian Rongomatane help our gardens our ground so we can prepare for the seasons of the year.
Matariki is mostly celebrated by us to remember those who have passed on in war. Those who died fighting for land and to protect their families from being killed from not having enough protection.
