Our focus value for this term is DIVERSITY – Uouongataha.
Yesterday, the students were given a poster with a picture of different types of people. They didn’t know what the picture was about but they were given the task of “what do you notice?”
Students were able to come up with words like – different people, black hair, brown hair, males, females, young, old, short and tall.
After the groups shared their words I asked them “what do you think this is all about?” and they said “different people? lots of people?” to which I replied… “thats correct – but, there is a word for that and it is DIVERSITY. This term we are learning about “DIVERSITY.”
I then asked “does anyone know what the Tongan word is for Diversity?” to which they looked confused. Until I gave them a hint “uo…” and they all shouted “UOUONGATAHA!!!!”
Next, we will be writing in Tongan about this value… We celebrate & value diversity in Room 9a 😎
