The William Pike Challenge Award is a motivating programme that assists schools and students (year 7) through 4 outdoor activities, 20 hours of community service and projects that improve life skills.
The Programme is a great way for your child to develop confidence, perseverance, integrity and pride in those around them and themselves. It is in 55+ schools around the whole of New Zealand and we are really fortunate to have this big opportunity.
The activities are Survival Camp, Caving, Kayaking, Snow Trip and Rock Climbing. These activities help boost your child’s fitness level and their ability to trust and work well with their peers. Out of the 5 the school only picks 4. The Community Service is the time the students get to serve the community by repainting tagged walls, visiting rest homes, etc. It is a great way to give back to the community and everyone in it.
The William Pike Programme started at Sutton Park School in year 2014.
Tuituiohu Neiufi was part of the programme last year. He said “William Pike has helped me gain more confidence in what I do and helped me conquer my fears.” His advice for the students this year was to make use of the opportunity they luckily have and to be resilient.
As a 2017 William Pike participant, I want to conquer my fears, challenge myself and learn new things outside my classroom.
