“E fafaga tama a manu i fuga o la’au, ae fafaga tama a tagata i upu ma tala – Language and Culture are sustenance for our children”.
Talofa lava and warm pasifika greetings. Welcome to the Samoan Bilingual Unit. We are Masina Vaaia. We have two Samoan Bilingual Units. In Room 23 we have Ms Gata Tosogi who teaches from Year 0-2 and in Room 22 we have Mrs Diana Tuaopepe teaching Years 3-4.
Learning gagana ma le aganu’u fa’asamoa is like the fruit of the coconut palm. The young shoot emerging is like the growth and development of young people. If the coconut palm is looked after properly, it bears well-formed fruit.
Fa’asamoa represents the values in the cultural life of Samoan communities which is expressed in and through language and culture. Therefore here at Sutton Park School we give our Samoan language learners every opportunity to develop their knowledge of their culture through teaching in the Samoan language in which students can observe, appreciate and respond to expectations. Through these experiences our Samoan language learners deveop knowledge and understanding of aganu’u Samoa.
Furthermore, at Sutton Park School we try to encourage the three core values of aganu’u fa’asamoa. They are alofa (love), fa’aaloalo (respect) and tautua (to serve). As outlined in the Samoan Curriculum “Taiala mo le Gagana Samoa”, it outlines that Alofa encompasses love -repay love with love, fa’aaloalo is the value of respect and tautua – where service is the pathway to leadership and authority and from these core values we mould our Samoan language learners into strong independent individuals.
Lastly, here at Sutton Park, we continue to create a supportive learning environment in the classroom as well as in our community with the support of the parents. We encourage reflective thought and action. We emphasise the relevance of new learning and facilitate sharing in terms of sharing Unit work with both classes and continue to make connections to prior learning and experiences and provide our Samoan language learners sufficient opportunities to learn.
